There are a few different ways to maintain your fire extinguisher. The most basic way is to check the gauge, nozzle, and seals every year. If the extinguisher has been used recently, you should also check the powder inside the canister. If you’re not sure how to check the extinguisher, there are a few guidelines that you can follow. First, start by unscrewing the nozzle. Then use a clean cloth to wipe down the inside of the nozzle and cover all of the threads on the top and bottom. Next, use a wrench to turn the nozzle counterclockwise until it’s tight. Finally, screw the nozzle back on and test it for proper operation by firing into water or some other combustible material. Another way to check your extinguisher is to sight down the barrel and make sure that there is no smoke coming out of the tail pipe. You can also press down on one side of the extinguisher using a blunt object and see if it leaks powder. If it does, replace the extinguisher immediately. Finally, keep an eye on your extinguisher when you’re not using it. Keep it in a safe place where children can’t get to it and make sure that it’s unplugged when you’re not using it.
